looking for seal kit for lower unit??

I am looking to buy a seal kit for a 1958 evinrude 18 hp I need the whole kit gaskets and all, but having trouble finding them.

That looks about right, but I can't say for sure without the part numbers. I don't see a seal for the shift cradle screw. That long skinny seal is the "gasket".

well I think I am going to do it myself, I am going to pick up the kit tomorrow, Is there any special tools I need to take the lower unit off, and when it is all done how will I know I put the water pipe and the shifter in right.

That should be the right kit. No special tools required to drop the lower unit. The shifter position won't change. You will have to position the water tube in the impeller housing as you put it back together.

Hi wayne, If I do it by myself would you think it would take more than a couple of days, and when I put the impeller back in the housing would it be hard, and if I miss the hole and start it up what woyld happen.

Since its your first re-seal it will take you longer, but I don't see why it should take you more than a couple hours unless something is exceptionally stubborn. I'd set aside a morning/afternoon for it.

The impeller isn't hard to replace. Just set it in place on the driveshaft with the key in. Put the impeller housing on top and slowly turn the driveshaft or propeller clockwise as you push down on the housing. It should pop right in. You shouldn't have too much trouble lining up the water intake tube, but if you do you just won't get any water circulating. Then it will overheat and possibly destroy itself if you don't turn it off right away.

You will be greatly aided by a jig to hold the lower unit. Here are a couple photos of mine. It holds every lower unit I've worked on from 1949-1988 from 3-35hp; OMC and Mercury. Its made from a 24" piece of 2x6. The slot in the center is 2" wide and extends for 9" then tapers to meet at 11". I just have mine clamped with a large "C" clamp so I can remove it (not that I ever do), but if you put a lot of pressure on it you will need something more robust to hold it.

Wayne: I will make the jig so that it is alot easier on the back as well, in that diagram that I showed you about the seal kit, that spagetti shaped rubber cord thing is that really the gasket to seal the lower unit to the top part of the unit together.

It sure is. Once you pop off the skeg (the lower fin shaped piece) you will see that it has a deep groove in it that the seal sits in. Clean that grove out well. Also clean the flat mating surface. Put blue Permatex silicone gasket maker in the groove and on all the mating surfaces. Not too much. Just enough to fill the voids and provide a seal between the surfaces. Place the spaghetti seal loosely in the groove (don't stretch it out) and leave a few milimeters overhang on each end. Then place the skeg back on making sure to line up the shift cradle in it's groove. At this point I attach the shift lever screw with its seal in the skeg and then start to tighten the skeg screws. Torque them slowly in a uniform pattern. Do not try to torque them completely the first time. Screw each one in a little at a time until they are all tight.

Make sure you have enough spaghetti seal in there. Too little and it leaks. Too much and it won't stay in the groove. Also, only use as much silicone as you need. You don't want excess squeezing out into the gears and plugging the oil passages in the bearings.

so your basically saying don't use too much silicone, should I put all the other seals on the other parts first, then put the spagetti gasket on.
