Hey Guys

I am new here and I am looking for a small fishing boat about 14 feet long and about a 9.9 HP motor.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here is one I am looking at:

http://prescott.craigslist.org/boa/1033897894.html

He said he would knock off 100.00 without the sears motor.

Is this a good deal? It seams like a clean boat and trailer.

Thanks
Aaron

The Cleaness is what grabbed my attention...but the price does seem a little high to me.

I should probably wait and see what else pops up.

Here is another one, but it is not as clean (1972 restored). It says that is has also been sitting for about a year.

I don't like the benches....Is doing bench work on these types of boats easy?

That would be Ok for the restricted lakes along The Rim. Too dinky for the lakes on the Colorado River or most of the lakes near Phoenix. I had a 17' aluminum boat here.

I want something that I can use in all of the lakes and this is the biggest I would be able to go, to be able to use on the Rim Lakes.

Re: Looking for small fishing boat in AZ.

That second one is a 1960s Starcraft or Sea King (made by Starcraft). The seats are easy to replace. The boxes under them are full of flotation foam. They're just screwed to the undersides of the seats. The ribs across the bottom of the hull have no drainage channel in them, which can be a small problem if you park the boat uncovered. I solve that with a wet-or-dry shopvac.

They're good boats, but have some flaws. I wouldn't take a 14' one in big water. I have the 12' version of that boat, and boat only on protected waters.

The engine is a 9.5 hp OMC outboard from the 1960s. When they're running well, they're good outboards. They are tougher to work on, though, than the later 9.9 hp models, and that's an understatement. There are several threads about that outboard here. It shares very little with any other OMC outboards, and parts can be a little difficult for some things.

All in all, that boat would work very well in small lakes, but that's about it. If you're going in bigger waters, you'll want something deeper and wider, like one of the 14' lunds with a broad beam.

Around Minnesota, something like that would sell for between $500-750, depending on how nice the trailer is.

Larger boats do run on the restricted Rim lakes. They simply leave their main motor tilted up in the trailer position with its prop out of the water, run only a 9.5hp kicker. Or electric trolling motor.

Those Sears motors are pretty tough to find parts for. I had one and I finally sold the sucker because it was getting expensive to buy parts for it.

Keep looking...I just got my '92 Sea Ray 200 for $3200 on CL. Try expanding your search to include Phoenix. There are people giving stuff away right now b/c of the economy. I drive past good cars and boats for sale in yards all the time.

Hey FlyinGuy
I actually am in Phoenix and am looking locally as well....That just happened to be one I liked because it was really clean.

That ad you posted does look like a good one. I just wish he had pics to send me so I don't have to drive so far just to look at it. I am located in N. Phoenix. I think I will give them a call though.

Thanks all.

the Lone star is a classic. pass on the motor. here is what it can look like with just a little work. this has a 1955 15 hp. the 54 is hard to find parts for.

Re: Looking for small fishing boat in AZ.

I see you're advertising on CL there in Phoenix. That's a really good idea. Lots of people look at CL when they're getting ready to sell a boat, just to see what the prices are like.

Some pretty good deals are found that way.

It looks like your budget is around $1000, more or less. That's a good range. Take your time and wait for a decent deal.

The most important advice I can give you is not to buy one with an offbrand outboard motor, especially in the 9.9 hp range. Avoid the Sears Ted Williams 9.9 hp outboards at all cost...they'll break your heart. The Chrysler-built 9.9's aren't horrible, but parts can be difficult. Try to find a Johnson or Evinrude, if you can. Good parts supply and lots of help here on iboats for any problems you may have with one. Also, don't be afraid of the Evinrude and Johnson 10 hp models from the 50s and 60s. Just make sure they're good runners when you buy.

Very Nice 13 ft Deep V aluminum boat with 10 hp Johnson, minn kota trolling motor, anchor, oars, trailer new boat tags/ perm trailer tags, Bimini top, lights for night navigation, new trailer wiring, tounge jack, very stable, looks very nice, bright aluminum. Blue Fin model believe its an 85-89, trailer tracks nice. just jump in and go needs nothing.

complete nice rig, all runs well. I'm looking for a travel trailer not to big or a nice pop up with no repairs needed. if interested please e-mail me with a pic of your trade inside and out, They do not have to be new, JUST NICE and I will do the same, as I do not know how to post them to craigs list. Thanks for looking.

Blue FIn built a great boat. stable, rugged. i would front mount the trolling motor, it is easy to turn the head around so you can control it on the bow.

What would be a good price for that one? Should I ask for a lower price without the engine as well? So I can get a 9.9 or something bigger.

Would the Blue Fin be a better boat to get? The guy with the blue fin is asking 1400.00 but I may be able to talk him down as well.

I wonder if boats in AZ are more expensive for some reason.
