I just polished my boat and I used a foam pad on the polisher. I used marine compound witch is not as abrasive as automotive stuff and when I was done I just use my ardex car wax and it's always worked for me. Watch friscoboaters YouTube vids. He dose a great job

Just to help clarify...the following only applies to a surface that has been determined to shine up...
Rubbing compound is used to remove oxidation and prepare the surface for polishing...it can be as aggressive as 220 grit sandpaper, or as mild as 800-1000 grit...
Polishing is done to brighten the surface and prepare it for glazing...it is usually in the 1500-3000 grit category
Glazing is done to remove any swirl marks left on the surface after polishing...we are talking about something in the 4000-6000 grit category...
Waxing is done to protect all of the work done to achieve that wet and shiny finish and must be done at least twice a season to maintain the protective aspect of it...
PS- the grits mentioned above are for comparison to actual sandpaper...
