I'm looking at buying a used Merc and not having a lot of familiarity with them I'm hoping to find some specifications on it. The seller says it's a 1988 150 hp exlpto with a serial # of B250609. The exlpto portion is easy enough to understand, but I'm having no luck matching up the serial number to any of the charts I've found on-line. Can anyone help me out with finding some info on this motor? I'm looking for stuff like the alternator output, if this was a troublesome model, how reliable is the oil injection, etc etc. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

88' it is. Oil injection systems on Mercs are very reliable. I don't know of any trouble these engines had, if they were taken care of properly in the past. The most important thing when buying is to do a compression test to determine the integrity of the engine. If compression is good (Over 100 PSI on each cylinder and within 10% of each other) then most other issues(If any) can be solved fairly inexpensively. Check the lower unit fluid to make sure it has no water intrusion(Milky looking). I don't know the alternator output off hand, but I would guess it's at least a 9 amp. system...

Thanks gentlemen, I appreciate the feedback. Where does one go for a reliable place to look up serial numbers? I had a glance at maxrules.com this morning and didn't see anything corresponding to OB2509xxxx or I just don't know how to interpret what I was seeing.

For the 150HP chart on that site you'll notice that the 4th column shows the serial numbers. As you move down the rows, until you arrive at the ones starting with "B"... you see that yours is a 1988.

Mercury/Mariner assigned their serial numbers sequentially to each motor.

1987 included s/n A904646 through s/n B241880
1988 included s/n B241881 through s/n C100860
1989 included s/n C100861 through s/n C221499

All the Merc charts work that way, regardless of the site you get it from.

Best place for you to find part numbers for that motor, is to go to mercurypartsexpress.com and type in your serial number. There you can find exploded parts diagrams, etc.

Do yourself a favor, and pick up a factory service manual. It will save you money and frustration in the long run.

Good luck.
