Looking for the right shop manual

Hey guys. I’ve seen referenced in posts a d also in the stickies a few recommendations for shop manuals. Some of the links are old and broken so I want to make sure I’m looking in the right direction. I’ve read that the Volvo brand manual is the best and I located this:

Is this manual just a portion of what I need for an all inclusive manual for my engine as well as my outdrive? I want to have all info on hand if possible. Thanks for the help.

the manual you linked to just covers the base engine. There is also a fuel, electric and ignition manual. Also a wiring diagram manual.
the drive and transom plate are in a 4th manual.

the manual you linked to just covers the base engine. There is also a fuel, electric and ignition manual. Also a wiring diagram manual.

Thanks for the reply. So it sounds like it is normal to need 4 separate shop manuals for an I/O boat?

There really isn’t a “normal”. It depends on the year and product. Yours is 4 manuals that are available for consumers. There is also an important manual available only to dealer techs called the design and function manual. This is very close to what a dealer tech gets at the factory school. It goes in depth on how everything works. Why it’s not available to consumers I have no idea.
Also available to dealer techs are the service bulletins. These cover issues that show up once the product is in use and also corrections to the manuals. It’s important to remember that the manuals were printed before the product was actually built, so there are almost always somethings wrong. Most manuals get revised once or twice. This is why it’s dangerous to buy used manuals somewhere like eBay. You can get manuals that were supposed to be destroyed by the dealer, but instead ended up being sold.
Some of the newest product will have 10-12 manuals. The newest MerCruiser Bravo drive manual is 5 or 6 separate books.
The last few years before I retired, never opened a paper manual. Everything was downloaded to my laptop, that way I was always using the most current information.
