So, after thinking I just had an issue with the deck panel covering the fuel tank, wishful thinking, I have quickly come to realize I have much larger issues. As one could imagine? I am in a bit of shock and at this point am a bit hesitant on how to proceed or what steps to take. I have taken some pictures for your review and looking for some advice. Over the past few weeks I have spent many hours reading posts within these forums, but it necessary hasn?t put my mind to ease and the thought of having to gut it makes me want to puke. Please note pictures are after removing the carpet and using a ShopVac.

Welcome to iBoats!

You have to gut it. Your boat is rotten. It's not as bad as it sounds, but it will take a while.

Get to it!

Welcome to the restoration forum, by the looks of it you'll be frequenting and musing through these threads for the next several months. I guess you probably know what you have to do. I have a 1970 Thompson I'm doing a transom, stringer, floor replacement. It was completely rotted. This is my first boat renovation and this is a great site to get all the information you need to do the job right.
How is the transom?

Greetings and thank you! So, I was looking at Dan's I/O Boat Transom Repair Adventures and didn't notice a start date or exactly how many hours you have in your little adventure? How many hours could one guesstimate my next adventure might take? It seems I hadn't stumbled upon your information yet, but have now added it as a resource!

Only problem with "Get at it" is... I am one month into a 6 month house renovation and can't dedicate the time my boat needs until the Fall. Bad timing.

Yes, it looks like I will be spending quite a bit of time on here! Seems to be a good source of information from firsthand experienced individuals. I am still in shock to see so many boats on here that have been gutted. After looking at your Thompson post, I didn't see any pictures before work started on it. Kind of curious as to what it looked like before. Transom??? Honestly I haven't had the nerve to check it yet, but I am sure before the weekend is over... I will have to know.

Re: Looking for your thoughts on my deck.

Greetings. My wife and I started our renovation in the middle of April, 2009 and are currently at the 1/2 way mark. We're still on schedule for finishing up in the first part of July. What you are feeling is nothing new, believe me. I was completely silent when it hit me, I just couldn't think of anything to say for about a few hours. After laying on my bed staring at the bedroom ceiling, I got on this forum. Next thing I know I'm having fun tearing the boat apart. It's been a lot of fun so far, and very exciting to see the progress.

Make yourself at home, lots of help and hospitality can be found here at iboats. So far, this site has saved at least 20 hours of work that wasn't necessary. We still have several phases in this project yet to come. At times I wish I was already retired so that I can work on our boat all day long. I like my real career though, I work 40+ hours per week so boat work is limited to a few hours after work on the weekdays and most of the weekends.

I suggest you just dig in and get started sooner than later. As for our project, we've found several major issues that we didn't know about at all when we began. Just take a deep breath, and once you gain your balance again -- DIG IN.

Cheers,
Nick

If you work every weekend and every night you have time, 2-3 months is a reasonable estimate, considering there's always a honey-do list.
