A good friend has a 1990 8hp merc. We used it last year, well this year it has no spark and wont fire. He offered it to me for $100. I have a Evinrude and a Sea king that both need waterpumps and lower unit seals. I would like to sell off the two above and spend the money on something more modern and have had luck with mercs in the past.

Any idea based on your experiences what the worst case $$ setback for a no spark merc could be?

IF you had to replace all the ign. system (Stator, trigger, switchbox, and both coils) the parts alone would cost about $450 from Merc.
But I have never seen one with everything bad.
Disconnect the kill switch and stop button in the handle and see if it has spark.

If it has decent compression and lower unit is in decent shape, I would say $100 is a bargin.

Get a shop manual from Mercury direct. You can check coils, trigger and stator with an ohm meter. You can not check the switchbox with an ohm meter but you can use a process of elimination.

Shop around online for parts, you can beat list price for Mercury parts.

Good luck.

I would buy it. Even with the worst case scenario, $450 in parts, it is still worth it. Over here an engine like that will get $550 easy.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I am intending to buy it. Bought a water pump for the Evin, so it is off to first person who wants it. Will do the same for the sea king. I will let you all know if I get a chance to play with it before the weekend is over.
