I am looking to buy a 22ft 2000 Bennington Pontoon. With a "2004" 40 HORSE 2 STROKE YAMAHA OUTBOARD.

1. This boat seems to be in good shape, asking price is $12,000. does this seem like a good deal? (includes motor but no trailer)

2. The price includes a "2004" 40 HORSE 2 STROKE YAMAHA OUTBOARD. Is this big enough for this boat?

Thanks

I think that motor is way to small.

Will you want to be tubing? If so that motor is too small to have much fun. To have a really good time I tell people a minimum of a 90HP, and a 115 or 150 would be better. 2 stroke motors are old technology (mixing oil and gas). While it's not a great price it's on the high side. Is the budget set at $12K?

If I'm not mistaken, the Evinrude E-Tec motors are 2 stroke and quite modern technology.

Just did a little checking..

Mercury Optimax and Yamaha HPDI are both 2 stroke engines.

I stand corrected. If he was going to buy an Evinrude it would certainly be pertinent. Since he's talking Yammy...

I just bought a 2004 aqua patio 220re 4 gate one owner with a 50hp mercury 4 stroke and a trailer from a dealer with a 30 day warranty paid $11,999 plus tax, that price seems a little high

I agree, I just bought a 2002 Odyssey Millennium 2103, 2002 40hp Mercury 2 stroke, and 2007 Tennessee tandem axle disk brake trailer for 9200 plus tax

I think I would push them to come down a good bit on price. I bought a 2008 Harris Tri-Toon with a 150HP verado for 20k a few months ago. I know that's 8k more, and a different boat, but it leads me to believe (like others) they're charging a premium for the name. I believe I saw a similar bennington with a 90HP for about the same price when I was looking.

Re: looking to buy a 200 Bennington Pontoon

Prices vary SO MUCH based on condition and location. There is really no way for any of us to know if the price is high or low w/o photos or having a better understanding of the local market on pontoons.

I did sell a 2000 Premiere 22/23 foot model with a 40 horse four stroke a year ago for 10k and it should have gone for more than that (no trailer), but the buy came right over, had chas in hand, and it was 3k more than I paid for it.

As to the boat size and the size of the motor and it being enough power, well that depends on where you will use it and how it will be used.

BUT, here is my $0.02, if this price range is good for you, and the size is fine, and the motor output is adequate, I would consider buying a brand new one. Here is why....companies like Sylvan, Bentley, and even Benny offer entry level, NEW pontoons in the 14 to 16k range. All with 40/50 hp four stroke motors, all with warranties, and all brand new. it won't be the slickest boat on the water, but likely a lot better than a 13 year old model.

You can buy a Sylvan Mirage Cruise 8520 Model with a 90 hp for under 18k. Just an example.

You won't be happy with that 40hp unless you really like going 10mph.

I think that's pricy for a 2000 and the engine size. Allot of times you are just paying for a name. And all that revolves around is the seats and interior. All pontoons are basically the same (granted there are allot of exceptions...I Know :D) They are all floating platforms with furniture on them. But you gotta look at what your getting compared to other boats. Your big $$ part of the boat is the motor. I wouldn't get too concerned with the brand....unless Bayliner makes a pontoon!!!!:lalala:

My old 20 footer with a 40 hp 2 stroke did 15 tio 17 with just me. But 10 to 12 was more like it a lot of times. At that time for us and the type fo lake we were own, it was fine.

Re: looking to buy a 200 Bennington Pontoon

When I sold my old toon for $10k, I remember thinking, why would someone pay that much for something that old? When I picked-up my new one, I was reminded again seeing brand new ones for $13,999....same sized motor, three year warranty, etc... and again, thought the same thing.

Toons can get VERY expensive, but when you loooking at the entry level market, they are some very nice models out there in very reasonable price ranges that come with no worries or concerns.

The new four strokes are so reliable too.

Look at other similar boats in your area and you can tell yourself if the price is high, in my area that would be on the high side for sure and the engine is super tiny, a 40 will move the boat and little more so if you want to putter around a lake and look at the scenery it will work but anything else and it is way small.

It sort of depends which model line it is too an S is entry level, a Q is top of the line and there is a huge price difference between them.

Re: looking to buy a 200 Bennington Pontoon

You should consider a pontoon or tritoon that has a powerplant that's close to the maximum the boat hull is rated for. If it's got a max 115 hp rating, don't go under 90 hp.

I may be retired, but don't think that my boats are run like I am old. I like to be able to beat storms across the lake, and having a boat that is seaworthy is important, especially if you're going to carry 8 to 10 passengers.

Higher horsepower motors can be run at lower rpm's, and they just don't have to have the stew run out of them to get you to your destination. My 1985 Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke planes out my 24' pontoon @ 2800 rpm's almost silently. My new F150 Yamaha on a Bennington tritoon is a 40 mph boat, and its slow cruises are also quiet and economical.

Hold out for more horsepower. You will be much more satisfied, and the boat will meet your present and future needs without having to be repowered.
