Greetings Four Winns threaders,

I am a novice boater who is looking to purchase a 2002 Sundowner 225, but had a few questions first. I'm hoping to get some expert advice.

The engine has 472 hours on it...is that extreme? Seems high, but I was on the boat yesterday, and it ran like a champ. Has anyone experienced any issues with the 5.7 liter V8 GM Vortec engine with the Volvo Penta Outdrive?

I am planning on having an independent mechanic look at the engine prior to purchase. Is there anything specific I should have him look at?

Any historic issues with the hull of the boat? The boat is kept on a lift out of the water, and seems to be in great condition body-wise.

I'm excited about the purchase, but cautious at the same time...any 225 owners out there who can offer a new "wanna-be" boater some advice?

Thanks for the ear.

May 2010 I purchased a 2002 Sundowner 225 dual prop 5.0 with 84 hours on it and in near mint condition. I put 30 hours on without a problem. I get a lot of compliments on the smooth ride, the interior comfort and looks. The performance from the 5.0 works for me just fine. It seems that the quality is there as my boat shows no sign of poor craftsmanship for a 9 year old boat. You did not mention the asking price so that may be the deciding factor to me in the decision. Hey if the price is right and the mechanic gives it a thumbs up, you wont be sorry I.M.O.

Thanks for the reply, sapphire...the boat is immaculate, and I think the only issue that is keeping me from pulling the trigger on the deal today is the amount of hours on the engine. I've heard from some independent sources that anything over 40-50 hours a year is high. But the "test-drive" went well.

The seller is asking $16,900 for the boat, including a bimini and camper top, plus all accessories. Very reasonable, IMO.

Re: looking to purchase 2002 4W Sundowner 225

Last year I bought a 1997 FW 205 Sundowner. When I bought it, it had 500 hours on it. It has the 5.7 liter fuel injected motor w/ the VP Duo Props. It was in perfect condition inside/outside. Not a scratch or flaw. 500 Hours is a good amount of hours, but I wouldn't be worried. As long as it has been maintained it should last another 500 hours. Mine runs like a top, w/ great power. It never smokes or has trouble starting. The only work I did do was changed my impeller and thermostat as a precaution before I started the season. I put 100 trouble free hours on it last year.
