Looper or not

I have a 1987 140hp johnson its on my chaparral 198f fishing boat. How can i tell if its a looper or what it is.It does run great.

Simple way is to count the carburators. If it has 4 individual carbs its a looper. If it has 2 carb sets its a crossflow.

Does this also hold true for a '81 70hp johnson?

Just bought engine and want to learn about it. Also I figure the oil mix is the standard 50:1 mix?

An 87 140 is a small bore looper V4. But lets look at the model number to make sure that's what we're looking at.

All 3 cylinder OMC's were loopers. From 1968 on. The 81 70 is a 49 cid 3 cylinder and yes, the correct mix is 50:1.

What is the significance of a looper or crossflow. What makes one more desireable than another?

I am picking up a 1973 115HP V-4 this Sunday, what would it be?

Why does 'significance' look like it's spelt wrong? LOL

A 1973 115 is a crossflow. The loopers are a more recent design (OMC started using loopers in 1968 ) vs. the crossflow design. The loopers will make more torque than the same "class" crossflow and get a little better fuel milage (comparing a carb'd cf to a carb'd looper).

Oh well . . . at least the carb rebuilds will be cheaper and quicker!
