I found some lovely small metal discs in the bilge tonight after pulling the tarp off the old Girl.

Boat: 1992 Four Winns Horizon OMC Cobra 5.0L

cant post the pics, I see where they came from, wondering if I need to be very concerned and process to get them back in?

I'm getting unknown error trying to add photo

These are small metal discs the size of a silver dollar, there are 6 holes in the side of the engine block 3 on each side. 3 of the 6 came off. Only looks like a mild adhesive held them in place.

Nothing special this year, marina winterized and then tarped her up. Critters? Freeze? .. Gremlins?

Help, thoughts, beer, all appreciated.

Those are the frost plugs, they were originally to allow the block manufacturer a way of getting the sand out of the block when it was made. now a days most people call them frost plugs and if the block freezes they will pop out and hopefully protect the block from cracking which in a lot of cases they don't and the block cracks. I would have the cooling system pressured check, and I'd be having a GOOD talk to the shop that winterized it - they may be liable in replacing your engine if the block is cracked. Good luck.

you need to be extremely concerned

those are core plugs not freeze plugs

they are NOT intended to protect your motor from freezing, they are there to get the casting sand out of the core of the motor at the foundry

most likely your motor has a cracked block, cracked heads, and cracked manifolds now from improper winterization.

if you paid for winterization, do not touch the core plugs, simply talk to the marina about them fixing it which is most likely a new motor. if they wont help, seek legal advice from your lawyer.

take photos of your receipt, the core plugs laying at the bottom of your bilge and the big cracks in the block that you most likely have.

Yup , Scott is right. Document everything and go raise some hell at the place that supposedly winterized it.

Becuase unfortuately there is no boating anytime soon for you and that boat . It will need some serious repair.

Thanks Guys,

Our winter up here was absolutely ridiculous, warm, bitter, moderate, bitter, 30" of snow, then 2. haha.

I took pictures and called the marina. I'll be taking it back there for an evaluation

We'll see how it goes from there. They are taking the matter seriously which is good.

I noticed considerable rust on the starter/solenoid which was NOT present at the end of the season, almost like water got into the boat through the tarp.. ick.. not a good way to start the season out.

Poor ol Gal, 26yrs old not a way I want to end with her.
