The lean-rich idle adjustment on my 79 Evinrude 25 vibrates out of adjustment as the motor runs. Is there a way to stop this? Once I get it set, it runs fine till it vibrates it's way back toward the lean setting. Perhaps a drop of gun tite or other such product?

What ya' need to do is replace the needle valve retainer Riverrat. It fits in that hole where the needle goes. It's got a square slot to hold the retainer in place. Maybe yours is gone or just wore out. Take a look. It'l be a reddish plastic round thing with a square tail.

These retainers are readily available from any Johnny/Rude dealer. PN 315232. Might cost all the way to a $1 + tax......cheap.

Re: Loose idle screw...

Got the retainer and put it in. Tried to count the turns that I made to take it out and then put it back in roughly the same position. Not sure I was exact. Now, I can turn and turn the screw and not see a noticable change in the idle. It's idling OK, smooth and all, but I made a bunch of turns toward the lean side and I'm not sure if I got it too lean or too rich. Should I turn it all the way in and then start backwards? Can I hurt it by having it set too rich or too lean?

Re: Loose idle screw...

Never mind guys...think I have it. I decided to turn the screw all the way in and back it out 1 and 1/2 turns or so, as I've read in other posts. When I screwed it in to where it seated, it took exactly one and one half turns. I backed it out to where it was and left it...Idles fine now.
