Re: Loose Magnets

I've had the salesman come by the shop and show me the clips. Seemed like alot of work drilling and stuff. Be sure all the old glue is off the inside of the flywheel and sand well. Same for the backside of the magnets. I use Marine Tex and have had good success. I'm a little leary of the Epoxy in the magnet kit. Like it didn't hold the first time, so why should I trust it again. But then again I've talked to mechanics that used the clips and they liked them. In fact, I sold the clip kits the salesman left me to try, to those mechanics.

Re: Loose Magnets

Capt Ken, Are the clips plastic? If plastic, seems like they might degrade from the heat also. I've glued magnets in two different flywheels more than once in each flywheel on this motor. I sure would like to fix it the LAST time.

Re: Loose Magnets

Im with Ken on not using the orignal epoxy, have used Duro 2 part epoxy and the cheap stuff from Walmark or Walgreen with very good results. The trick is clean clean clean.

Re: Loose Magnets

OMC has epoxy kit for these magnets and you can buy a single magnet if you break one. There is direction to these magnets there is a knoch that has to be line up. If you pull them out clean all the old epoxy out and skuff the metal on the flywheel and clean it with break clean befor you epoxy. This has been a problem for omc for a while. We make it part of or service to look at the magnets on these flywheel.

Re: Loose Magnets

The secret to making the repair long lasting is to glass bead blast the steel inner ring of the flywheel where the magnets fit. If you don't, any rust remaining in the ring will "grow" and pop the magnet off again, no matter what make of epoxy is used.

Use a smooth even coat of the factory expoxy which will keep moisture from getting behind the magnets and starting to rust again.

The plastic ManaLocks that hold the magnets in place work very well and were designed by a marine tech in South Florida. They've been on the market for a few years and have held up, no heat type of problem has occured.

Re: Loose Magnets

Happy Holidays to All,
I am bumping this post up with an update and a plea for help. I glued my magnets in with JB weld. In comparison to the OMC epoxy, I think the JB Weld will work better than the OMC stuff. It seemed to have a better consistency making it easier to work with. Plus it's cheaper and it comes in tubes. I found that my drum sander on my drill press makes a great flywheel cleaner. Time will tell.
After replacing the flywheel, I have discovered an intermittent problem. I have no ignition on either side, determined using a spark tester. During trouble shooting, measuring the various circuits for output, the ignition suddenly returns and the engine runs fine. Next day, same thing, no ignition but it mysteriously returns during testing and runs. I feel like the problem must be in either the stator or the timer base since both power packs are failing to output at the same time. My stator was replaced last spring and was not damaged when the magnets came loose. They did not come loose under power. Can attempting to start the engine with the magnets shifted harm the stator or timer base circuits? My question is what component is most likely to be the source of the problem and what test will confirm the fault?

Re: Loose Magnets

See Vinneys post about the notches, and there is about a 7/16 gap between each magnet, then I would check the pins in the connectors and grounds.

Re: Loose Magnets

We have used just about every 2 part epoxy out there including the E/J stuff with no problem. Like Seahorse says - its the cleaning thats the secret. We glas bead the flywheel. We have even reglued the center hub magnet.

Good luck!

Re: Loose Magnets

How do you know when the magnets are loose? Does it make a noise?

Re: Loose Magnets

Thanks, I lined up all magnets with beveled corners in same orientation using 7/16 bolts as spacers. It runs so magnets seem correct. Have checked pins, connectors, wiring and can't find obvious problem. Could ground in trigger circuit of one power pack ground both sides? I have impression that two ignition circuits are completely separate.

Salty - Loose magnets never made noise. Motor will not start after one or more slides over and contacts another. Found them by observing one sliding down below flywheel. One time one did move far enough to contact stator, break in half and cut winding on stator. Half of magnet now lies some where off 7 Mile Bridge.
