loose shift cable

Just pulled my lower unit and noticed water in the jaw area, then noticed the shift cable wasn't tight to the bell housing. Is the nut on the transom side attached to the cable housing? Doesn't want to tighten down.

Yes it is, and there is a nut on the DRIVE side of bellhousing. Pull your upper off and you will see it

Re: loose shift cable

This info is for MR/R and Alpha drive.Didn't see the Brovo till later. The older cables screw in from the rear. The new replacements go in from the front. If yours is loose you need to replace it with the new style.
Just hope that the hole isin't corroded so bad that it can't be tapped out.
Get a manual. If you don't install it right it can get costly.J

Re: loose shift cable

Here are some pictures from the BRAVO outdrive manual.
If the cable will not tighten down, then the threads are probably stripped and the cable needs replaced.

Re: loose shift cable

Thanks for the info, very helpful. Looks like my cable is toast. Can I install it without the special tools?

Sure, it just takes some fiddling to get the adjustment right.

If it was leaking for very long you might want to pull the rear cover on the drive and clean/ re grease the detent ball.
Good Luck Muc

Re: loose shift cable

Should I be concerned about the salt water that entered the jaw area on my bravo 2. There was no water in my oil when I drained it.
