Re: Loosing Traction Towing out of Ramp

I used to tow a 24 footer with my dodge van - six banger. It was only a mile to the ramp and two turns all under 35 MPH.

This was a regular van with a regular axle. (Only one wheel would spin when slipping)

I often let some air out of the rear tires and on occassion I had to pull the boat up the ramp diagonally across a few lanes but I could pull it out. Pulling diagonally would transfer more weight to the slipping deflated tire and lower the angle of rise and she'd come out.

Not that these are great ideas and they are guranteed to upset others at a busy ramp but it beats smokin tires and getting a pull vehicle to assist.

my 2 bits :)

look i have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 with all terrain tire and a 19foot cc and i dont loose tracken at all like thay said check your tongue weight and check your tire it dont mater how much power what gear it in if you dont have good grip it wont catch traction. because i have a work truck that a chevy 3500 duelly with alison tran. but it has regular street tire and it will spin like crazy when thay get wet or on wet surface best of luck

Re: Loosing Traction Towing out of Ramp

Yeah a diesel is all well and good but probably not necessary for the OP. I pull a ~4000 lb boat+trailer behind a 5700 lb truck with 351W backed by a ZF5 trans. Does the trick just fine. Sure more power would be nice but I'm in no hurry. Granny gear gets me rolling and I just gotta wind out the gears a bit due to the large gear spread. Don't use 5th when towing, not enough torque. Eventually I'll swap to a 460 when the 351 dies (200k and still going strong).

For the OP, a good detroit locker would help. A limited slip is more of a reactionary traction device, but certainly better than an open rear. Not sure about these new fangled trucks, whatever year a "triton" is, but I know in the '80-'96 Ford trucks it's a fairly easy swap to 4 wheel drive. A Dana 44 TTB will literally bolt right in place of the 2WD front suspension. If you do a 4" or greater lift a '78-'79 F-150 dana 44 (solid axle) will bolt right in with all factory parts. Just need the lift so the center section clears the dropped '80-'96 front TTB crossmember. Then obviously swap a 4WD trans and transfer case, bolts right in. So if you're truck is '96 or earlier it's a fairly cheap and easy swap to 4WD. Later trucks may or may not be easy like this.

I pull my 1971 19ft Gulstream 2300lb with my 2004 4runner V6-2wd, and trailering it just fine. I've ran across this problem a few times coming out a steep ramp, and getting someone to jump on the front of the boat seems to be not a problem. I say stay cheap it will give you more money for fun.

avoid low tide?
If you have no choice, I have used the idea already posted about getting two guys to ride in the back. that 400 extra lbs worked great

well back to the tire thing, yes can and do make a very big difference.
had michelins and they were worthless on anything not dry.
i could get stuck on flat ground with only a few inches of snow.
now have goodrich ta ko and so far have hade no problems.
they can really tear a yard up believe me.
