Re: Losing things

Oh the list is long...

Two pairs of RayBan sunglasses, one cell phone, a couple rod and reel combos, a few anchors, one outboard, (that's a story unto itself) clothing, life vests, hats, etc. Put it in a boat, don't secure it and run 50mph- it's gonna part company with you.

I still remember losing the outboard. My father used to borrow a buddy's 14' johnboat back when I was little. We would take it down to Lake Cumberland and go fishing. It was an old tub with an ancient 10hp engine. We had launched the boat and were headed out of the marina and the engine started running rough. My dad parked at the fuel dock and asked the attendant for help. They decided for some reason that they needed to take the engine off the boat. Well, after they undid the fuel line and loosened the clamps, the engine was loose. After my dad picked it up and handed it to the attendant, it slipped from his hands, hit the side of the dock and the boat and fell into 90' of water. The look on my dad's face was a look I've never forgotten. It was also the first time I ever heard him say "phuck". I was flabbergasted.

Needless to say, it was never recovered. LOL

UFM82

I have a lock box that I keep mine in, as well as locking that in the trunk of the car or in the truck. Also, my shoulder holster has a strap that keeps the gun in place while bending over. I would get a newer shoulder holster. That really bites.

Re: Losing things

The Skoal story reminds me of an incident several years back. My fishing buddy and I were on Oneida Lake in upstate NY in a rented 14' boat. Somehow we had swapped ends of the boat. He issued a request. "Hey,Jack! Toss me my cigarettes." Funny thng was he never made a move to catch them as they sailed past his head and into the drink. He still claims that Johnny Bench couldn't have caught them with a smelt net. Now I'm no althlete but my throw wasn't that far off. I'm just lucky it was a rented boat. If it was his boat I would have been forced to walk the plank. Now, some 15 to 20 years later he still acts PO'd when talking about it. By the way, I quit smoking. He hasn't.
I can say that scientific research proves that cigarette paper will not burn after a thorough soaking and 4 hours of sunlight exposure.

I had a good holster with a snap but when i was pulling the anchor up i reached down low and the side rail caught the snap and popped it open.

We where camping on an island that you could only get to by boat and to be honest i never like not having the gun close by lol cause locked in your car or truck that can be broke into easily or even a small lock box that can be pried up and stolen that happens alot out at that lake.

But all in all i should have left the gun at home but we had to carry when off duty

The cigarette story reminds me, way back, we used to smoke those little swisher cigars while fishing...until about the 4th time I burned through the line while setting the hook. Doh!

Re: Losing things

My boat broke down for the first time ever last year. Seems as though when you forget your plug the week before, and get the engine wet....that could cause an I/O's starter to fail later  Anyway, while trying to find a tow....I go to the bow to take a leak. My phone rings, and my wife thinks it would be funny to get my attention by touching my crack with the antenna. I thought it was her finger. I reached behind me and slapped the phone about 20 yards off the side of the boat. Too bad my boat wasn't 20 yards wide 'cause we didn't have another cellular. 4 of us waited for 2 hrs for another boat to pass for a tow. :p

Last week, my son did what he was told and threw the anchor exactly when I told him too. I was watching my depth finder and looked up in time to see the last of my 150'of 1/2 inch anchor line disappear over the side. "Dad, you did'nt tell me to tie it off!"

My anchor line is ALWAYS tied to a solid part of the boat. It's the only way to go.

Re: Losing things

Late november in northern California, 4:00 AM, foggy, probibly high 40s, Launched a 14 ft jon boat with 2 guys 2 shotguns, decoys and a big ol lab, oh and an OLD 15 hp outboard.

As my buddy was pulling away on the outboard(to the port side) the dog decided to jump to the port side, I tried to counter the action to the starboard side but I was too late.

Water pours in, like a freakin river! The old wood in the seats lets go and the flotation in the two back benches pops out. ooops. Fortunately we were only in 5 feet of water.

All of the gear is on the bottom of the lake including the shotguns. So... we draged the boat in and (remember the air temp in in the 40s I figure the water temp was similar.) Anyways we striped down and went "fishing" we got all of our stuff back except for a couple of the silouette decoys.

No we were not wearing life jackets... that kind of thing never happens to us. Now we wear them!

Re: Losing things

I'm trying to set a anchor in whiskey town lake so I can do some trout fishing by some devider floats. So i'm just kind of drifting along and I finally stopped.. After about an hour I decided to move on and as I'm trying to pull up, I also pulled up the main steel cable that the connects to the deviders.. I got scared and cut my line.. I felt kind of stupid for loosing my free anchor.. .. I felt worse going into the store telling the guy what I did.. He got a good chuckle out of it.. He told me that there is probally 200 or more sitting in the same spot... Boy, I took a deep breath, becuase I was so releived.. For a minute, I thought i was the only dumb dumb to that.. Thank god there are others to follow lead.

Re: Losing things

Lost my anchor in the Cumberland River this fall, we were eating lunch while the water was risiing (genearation from the dam) and the the anchor drifted a bit, then bit and bit good. I have an anchor off the front of the boat but this one was tied off of the back and the physics of that are not good in a a 14 foot aluminum V-hull with a low transom. I ask my buddy to back us up with the trolling motor on the bow to take the tension off the rope. Instead, he tries to turn us broadside into the current--even worse physics as I watch the water come right to the gunnel. I yell and he stops the trolling motor, I cut the rope loose. Low water two days later, we go back and get the anchor. Found another one also in the same spot. I've "rescued" more anchors than I've lost on that river, but this experience made me a believer--no more anchor off the back in rising water! And, maybe I'll mount a knife in a scabbard next to the line, just in case!

Re: Losing things

Hello all, just joined after a couple of weeks of lurking! Nice place you guys got here!

MotorBoaterBill.....Lake Cumberland is about as anchor-unfriendly as it gets! Below the dam has always been to scary for me, and they don't always set off the dishcharge alarm. Above the dam is up to 200', and full of nice rock ledges to hang into when anchoring just off the shoreline.

So here goes my first post, even if it's a "lost" story.

Me and my best high school buddy decide to go to a local city water lake to do some catfishing in a 10' jon boat. (It's a trolling motor only lake.) So about an hour after dark, in the midst of some senseless "what ifs" and "I wonders" the topic came to our lantern. I asked, "I wonder how long that lantern would burn if it fell out of the boat?" We disagreed, one saying instantly out, and the other saying it would continue to burn for a few secs till the water filled it up. About two minutes later, buddy just had to stand up to take a leak. When he did he shifted his weight to the same side of the boat that I was on. So then we both shifted our weight to correct the situation......and over went the lantern. Guess what? Instantly out! We both just stared down into the dark water for a moment, then one of us said "Guess that settles that!" Had a little laugh and then realized that the lantern was the only form of light we had except for a bic. He held the lighter while I tied on a monster treble and we began lantern fishing. 30 mins later still no lantern. The only problem was that it was Dads lantern. Told him what happened and his reply was "Yep, I guess that did settle it" That following Christmas I got a lantern, and was told to leave his others alone. Good deal IMO! :D

LOL, No Worries! I've been in the dark with just a bic more than once, and they sure don't put out much light (burn your thumb, too).

You're right, the river below the dam is truly dangerous, and people die there nearly every year. I know it pretty well, and I treat it with the utmost respect. Way to easy to end up a Darwin Award there instead of just a Stupid Human Trick!

I have a sunglass law - the cheaper and uglier the sunglasses the less likely I am to lose them. For me once a pair of sunglasses goes over $15 they last about 1 week.

I have lost a few boat ladders - I never seem to tie them down.

Tomatolord
