Loss of power 35 HP Evinrude

Hi all. I have a 35 as the title says, anyway i had the thermastat changed and it ran ok the first time out but seemed to run a bit hot. I ran it for a total of maybe ten min. I have since then been a little reluctant to take it out. Well i did yesterday it seem to run ok but i can only get it up to 12 or 13 mph where before i would get 23 or 24. When i ran it i had a 200 degree temp stick and it never got there. Could damage have happend at less then 200? or could it be something else. There is one other thing there is a small linkage for the carb that the mech took off to use the throttle from the engine, and i cannot figure out how that thing goes back on, could it be that? Any ideas and imput will be appreciated. Thanks, Dean

If its a small rod curves out at top and bottom it goes into 2 plastic keepers. what year motor? and can you get a pic.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that's your problem. I'd also not run that motor until you get it figured out. If it's the linkage between the two carbs, your bottom carb is not opening up. That also means half your engine isn't getting any lubrication.

Hey you guys thanks for your replys. #1 this is a '76 35 hp. #2 it has only has one carb.. I have taken a couple of pics and i will try n figure out how to post em. Cool the pics are there. When i connect the two ends with the motor running it dies!

You may need a variety of carb adjustments, including throttle and choke linkage, solenoid adjustment, throttle cam adjustment, etc... Do you have a manual, if not, they are a good investment. It looks as if the throttle cam and linkage are unhooked.

Hightrim is right need to readjust carb and linkage definatly need manual. it looks like something is missing there should be plastic keepers in holes to hold rod.

Thanks again. I do have a manual. And yes there is a little plastic keeper for the end of the linkage that isn't connected. The reason for that is when i hook it up it pops off probably just old and worn. Took it to the shop yesterday to have em hook it up, they did and off to the river for 'another' test run, well same as last. Took the cover off and thats how the linkage was, in the 1st pic. It just seems to be to tight of a fit for that to stay in without the plastic popping out!

a nylon keeper thing snaps onto the throttle cam.Pointed tip cut in the middle snaps into hole on cam.Linkage snaps into nylon keeper.Linkage slides freely in keeper untill bent end of linkage hits keeper.The linkage then opens throddle.This happens when the choke is activated.Once choke is open this linkage slides releasing the throttle.

It's only use is to give some throttle at start up when choked.

Thanks 60 grit, it makes complete sence, however when i hook it up just like you explain, with any movement of the throttle it pops off, like in the first pic. Its like there is not enough space for it. I dont know it sure seems simple but its got my number

When throttled the link should stay stationary. the nylon keeper moves with the throttle.Is something bent?Are both ends of the link free to pivit easily?Keeper pivits in hole of throttle and the other link end is bent in a hole.These parts are lined up nicely and sliding is smooth.Something must be bent out of alignment,binding,or keeper is worn so much.That's all I can think of.

Thanks again 60 Grit. Nothing seems to be bent and the plastic keeper is pretty worn. Does the linkage in the first pic look to you to be on right? Ive not tried to put it on the othe way, just a thought.

Yes it's on right.There is no keeper in the picture.
