I have a 1998 E200 TXECM that yesterday we were going along at 3600rpms when all of a sudden the engine reved up to 5000rpm and a loud band as if engine came out of water I shut boat down to check and all seemed fine. When I started back up I shifted to forward and nothing happened ans when I tried reverse it started in gear then nothing. Is there a shear pin or cog that will break if you hit something? There is no water in gear case and it doesnt smell burnt. I have pulled case this morning.

Just sounds like a spun prop hub could be the problem. Make two marks, one on the propellor hub, and the other on the pop itself, then give it a try. If the marks move then the hub is bad. If not, could be a more serious problem in the lower unit, clutch dog or something perhaps.

Sounds like lower driveshaft broke at pinion, never heard a rubber prop hub go bang. The new square plastic hub prop will go bang when they let go and this is usually due to running prop loose.

Could the bang have been from the prop hitting an object? I spun the prop on my old I/O when I was demo'ing it to a perspective buyer (very embarassing, BTW). Once the boat was on the trailer, I put the drive in gear and tried to turn the prop. It was very easy to turn, which told me that it was spun; if it's in gear, it shouldn't turn by hand.
