I love the old fenders but they are so rotted I can't really save them unless I do a ton of cut and weld.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I ordered rollers and bunk supports. We decided to make our own roller supports.
Buy metal; 3/16 x 1" x6', from Mcmaster Carr.
Cut to rough length
mill end to finish length
drill holes for roller pins
bend to shape
mill slots for attatching to trailer and to allow adjustment

Zach thought Dad's shop was the bomb. He even helped mill the slots. He lost no fingers or eyes in the making of these parts. He was fascinated by the CNC milling machines. We could hear them before we got into the shop, running at 15,000 rpm. A good father son bonding time for sure.

Man, Zach will never, ever forget this project. And making your own parts - that just rules.

You're doing good stuff to the world Don.

Anyone recomend a good citrus based stripper? I would like to strip and paint the boat.
HA just used a product called Citristrip gel, it also comes in a stray can. You can find the results in his retore thread starting on page 71ish. Looks like it did an awesome job. I saw the product at our local HD.

Great project with the son. This will be remembered as well as all the good times to come.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Thank you TundraRocks and HuronAngler that Citristrip is just what I was looking for. I'm going to get some tomorrow and start on the boat.

paproof, my son will remeber this always. He's so pumped.

The brackets turned out ok. No two are alike but they are fully functional. Paint em black and stick em under the boat, no one will be able to tell.

Took the fenders off. The trailer is 80% painted now.

I was 25 before my dad gave me his boat, but I still think he's the greatest dad in the world. Good luck with the teen years, I know I was a little *#*%!
Y'all are gonna have a great time. Glad he's so into it!

We're official now! As soon as we get moving we'll try to finish the trailer. Then on to the boat and finally the motor.

Great wedding last night. I danced like a girl and told everyone I loved them. Nothing like a good Italian (maybe a german/polish)wedding with a lot of family and friends to get you going. And the wife's still talking to me, so all is good! I had fun but not too much!

Zach is allready bugging me to fix the trailer so I need to get moving.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

We got the roller brackets done painted and put together. Got a couple bolted on the boat and they don't quite fit! Ahh fudge, back to the shop where Mr. Hydraulic press will increase the bend offset. Here's what I have now. Much better, the roller spins freely now.
aug2011008-1.jpg

Second one fits also, so we put the boat on the trailer to see how it fits.
aug2011009.jpg

Feels like progress now. Next is two more rollers and the front bow stop. Winch and then bunks and I'll be feeling pretty good.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Previous owner replaced the transom with two pieces of mismatched 1/2" raw pine. Yikes!!
aug2011010.jpg

Inside looks even better.
aug2011011.jpg

Zach can't believe they used liquid nails to glue it to the boat.

What a lucky kid, he gets to see all the lathes and milling equipment at work.

Even better that he gets to learn how to use them from an expert:)

The Sea Scamp has some great lines to her, can't wait to see what you do with the boat:D

Been doing it for thirty years and have gotten pretty good at some things. I know my way around a foundry and a machine shop or fab shop pretty well.

Question for the StarBroHood; What type of plywood can I get away with on the transom? I recall someone (EZ maybe?)mentioning a plywood at Lowe's that wasn't marine grade but would work. Any help appreciated.

What does the transom look like on the outside of the boat? Any pictures or measurements would be appreciated.

News flash; I bought a SodaBlaster at HF on clearance for dirty cheap. I call it a Jasoutside deal, it set me back $20.00. Just remembered it was stowed away in the basement from 6 months ago. I'm going to sodablast the Scamp and see what happens.

Arauco plywood is the stuff, it's from Brazil and high quality. Very few if any voids or cracks.

Most Lowe's stock it but some do not so I'd call ahead and ask.

Some folks eliminate that exterior piece. Others use ply sealed with resin. Bob_VT used a cutting board to avoid rot.

I really like Jason's Jet Star transom made of aluminum, that might be the way to go so it lasts forever.

The wood helps to reduce vibrations from the outboard if that's what you want.:)

Don--

another plywood option is the birch stuff at Slowes/Home Despot. i wasn't sure about the waterproof-ness of the glue so i soaked a sample for 2 weeks in a jar of water, with a few drops of dish soap added to max the water's permeation ability. result...no glue separation even after the wood fibers were swollen.

but tell Long John there that he needs an eyepatch and parrot ;) it would double as Halloween costume

I agree aluminum would be cool. I'm going to use plywood though, 1 piece will do both the inside and outside. That'll keep costs down. Off to Lowes I go.

Thanks Barato that gives me another option. Nice quality test too, Mythbusters for Starcraft Restorers.

My son hates Long John Silver. After reading of all the mean things pirates do he's not too keen on them. I suggested the name Long John Silver for the boat and it was an emphatic NO. He nixed Jim Hawkins also, and thought of the name Treasure Island by himself.

The welder at work can plug those holes from the previous owner. Too bad it will wreck the inside paint job, which is pristine. I'm going to try to color match it in those few spots near the back of the transom.

Harbor Freight (baking soda) and Lowe's Friday. Hmmm, sodablast or citrus strip? Soda $35/50 pound, citristrip $20.00 for a bottle. Cheap or different?

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

GA_Boater it's all about famlily time. Zach drew a picture for his speach tutor. It was a book with a series of pictures in it. The first page he got to draw anything he wanted. He drew the little 12 footer, sitting on the trailer. The boat had a big smile on the side of it. He told me the boat was happy because we own it. So funny.

We did the family thing Wednesday and went to the Warren City Fair on Friday. By Saturday I was Jonesing to work on a boat. Moma worked all day so we spent time with the Sea Scamp. Rollers, winch, winch strap etc.

Does this look right? I think the post is too high.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I was just about to turn him in to the Starmada for lack of working on his boat. Then he stepped up his game. He knocked out a couple of bunk boards for me.
seascampAug292011006.jpg

Then he took of with these fellas and left me to work by myself. Occasionally he would tell me "Great job Dad, your so great".
seascampAug292011004.jpg

Then I started removing the liquid nails, no fun here.
seascampAug292011002.jpg

Zach did about a half an hours worth of scraping himself. I was impressed. Then back to the swingset.

Seats need to come out. Previous Owner varnished over the old half-worn out seats. It felt like sandpaper on the seats. off they come.
seascampAug292011007.jpg

All seats removed, citrisstripped and scrubbed.
seascampAug292011009.jpg

The bow seat got 4 holes drilled in it, to mount a seat. 4 holes in the mahogony bow seat, sweet.
seascampAug292011005.jpg

Sanding the old varnish off sucked so I used Citristrip. It didn't take it all off. So I'll be sanding next week.

I talked to the welder at work and he''ll plug up the 4 holes drilled in the back of the boat. Yikes. It'll be a happy little boat here soon. I see it smiling allready.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Don - Could you make a smile stencil and work with Zach to put a smile on his Sea Scamp? A little bit of Zach ownership there.

Your winch post is too high. It's lifting the keel off the roller. Ain't trailer work fun?
