Why don't you just take the panel off. Mine comes off that way. Pretty simple.

After the control arm comes off that 'panel' is the outer clamp for the screws to hold the box to the inside of that wall, it should then fall loose.

Write down then disconnect the trim wires so the box will be free to pull out with the cables.

Re: Lost forward and reverse in water

oh boy that was some fun.

I took that setting screw out as charlieb had advised and the next problem were the trim wires. They had what I think are called 'bullet plugs' so I didnt have a problem of removing them.

The biggest issue was all the rusty screws that were holding the back plates in place. I'll have to replace all of them but at least they are off.

Anyways, as ensign suggested, the problem was the cable itself. For good measure I will be replacing both of the cables so they are the same age.

Now I wonder:
when choosing which cables to buy:
-are they engine specific (year and/or model and/or make)?
-Ideally i'd like to buy at a brick and mortar, website is fine if i have to or my mercury dealership - how do i know which ones to buy? WM has 20 different kinds! many are 'universal' teleflex...what does that mean and how can I ensure the ones I get are correct?

To note, the cables were about 13' - 14' long.

thanks for all of your help so far everyone.

Re: Lost forward and reverse in water

Hi all,

so I picked up teleflex cables and tried to install them. First thing that happened to me was the bolt that held the shift cable at the control box broke off. So I had to take out all of the gears in the control box in order to replace it.

Now after re-installing everything, the control box slips when putting it into reverse and I lose shifting capabilities once again. This time around, the problem is with the control box.

I've created a new thread to address the issue as I feel it is related to this thread, but a different situation.

If you have any ideas for me please head on down to this thread.

Thanks for everyone's help.
