I have an 84 omc 3.0 liter attached to a 400 stringer drive. I broke my belt the other day, didn't realize it til my battery was discharged. Temp was pegged, although it must have heated up quickly as I check pretty often. I haven't had any time yet to fool with anything I just checked my oil and pulled a plug, no water present. She turns over fine. What else should I check? Would this misshap have damaged the impeller?

Re: lost my belt

If you were in the water the impeller should be fine as it is in the out drive. The impeller was probably still pumping water to the engine but the engine wasn't circulating the water as your belt was broke. If it still cranked, it at least didn't get hot enough to seize the motor. How long was the temp pegged? If not for very long it probably is fine. If for quite a while it could have cause some damage but you wouldn't know with out taking the thing apart. Personally, I think it is fine. Get a new belt, fire it up and keep a good eye on the temp. See what happens.

Re: lost my belt

That's what I wanted to hear. I couldn't have been running that hot for more than a couple minutes. Funny they must heat up fast without water. This time I think I'm going to slip a couple of belts in there (my momma didn't raise no dummy). Thanks manip.

I have a 5.7 OMC and I was running it on muffs. The hose I was using was a small coil hose and wasn't supplying the engine with enough water. I was reving it up checking my timing and piddling around. I went and looked at the heat gauge and it was in the red! I shut it off immediately. I probably ran it for 5 min or so. That was a few years ago. I never had a problem with the motor or anything. No smoking or knocking. The motor wasn't under any stress when this happened. Of course it's not good for it but I don't think it suffered any damage. Today, it runs fine, no smoking or knocking. Again, I wouldn't worry about it.
