Hi everyone,

I just went out on the bay this morning and lost my prop. I also lost the plastic cone on the outside (where the cotter pin went through), and what ever is below the prop. Right now all I have is the shaft with the 2 holes and the threading on the end.

My question is what did I lose? I never took the prop off so I havent a clue what was under there.

Also what is the best manual to get for this engine. Thanks for any help,

Ron

Hi Ron,

Sorry to hear about your prop. I don't know about how to describe the other stuff you probably lost, but I would recommend the OEM Evinrude shop manual. They are great and can be gotten off e-bay real cheap. Just keep looking if you don't find it right away. I got mine for $10 and it's miles better than any other manual out there. Don't bother with Seloc etc. get the OEM.

Hi there Ron. Sounds like you lost the prop nut, thrust washer, and cotter pin too. Your local Evinrude dealer should have these items in stock. Good luck.

If you have a shaft with two holes, you motor is not a 76 vintage, but 74 or before. If you had a 1976 it would have splined shaft and only one hole for a cutter pin. On a 1974 you will have a shear pin, the prop, sometimes a washer and then a propnut with a cutter pin thru it. On a 1976 and later, you will have a trushwasher, the prop, a fiber washer and propnut with a cutter pin thru it.

Hi Guys,

This is a model number 25552b, SN:eooo1115 I guess it is a 1975 from what I can tell. The shaft does have one larger hole near the bottom and the smaller hole near the top for the cotter pin.

What part of the prop shaft actually drives the prop? Is there a gear that drives it and how is that attached to the shaft? I am assuming that it is attached to the larger hoe at the base of the shaft, Is that correct?

Thanks for all the help so far,

Ron

A shear pin is put through the hole nearest to the gear housing. The prop rests on this pin, the hub has a slot on inside for it. If you occationally hit something, the pin will breake and protect your gears.

your's sounds the same as my 1970... on mine there is no washer below the cone or in front of the prop (thrust).

so you need:
drive pin (also buy spares to keep in boat)
prop
cone
cotter pin (stainless isn't a bad idea, also keep spare in boat, in case you drop it in the lake while changing a broken drive/shear pin)

I got the correct factory service manual off ebay for $12... more generic manuals covering several models/years (e.g. seloc) are not bad either, available from iboats or at other fine retailers

good luck

Hi guy's,

So it is the shear pin that actually drives the prop? There is no gear in there? Thanks again for all the help,

Ron

That's correct Ron.If the pin shears ,the prop is just freewheeling on the shaft but kept from falling off because it is contained by the nut/cone and cotter pin on the end of the propshaft. The gears are contained within the lower unit case and convert vertical rotating engine driveshaft to horizontal propshaft rotation.

Re: Lost my prop. What else did I loose? 25hp Evinrude 76

yes that's right. The gears are in the closed casing (in oil). The prop shaft sticks out of back of the gear case.. there are prop shaft seals to keep the oil in and the water out.

Buy the correct drive/shear pins. Don't use a nail or something. Otherwise it won't "shear" if your prop hits something. It's there to protect the gears (pin should break before gears do). Your cotter pin probably rusted through and broke off, cone unscrewed itself, if you pull the prop back 1/2", the shear pin just drops out (so be careful anytime you are monkeying with it on the water).

This is why it's nice to have a manual to flip through! You'll get to see good pict's of all where all the stuff is.

take care
