Lost Neutral and Reverse - Uh oh!

Hello Fellow boaters. I took my boat out for some test runs to check some other issues I was having with my boat this past Monday and it seems like I must of hit a rock or something hard in the no wake zone. Definitely felt a vibration upon impact then it went away. The boat was running fine afterwards from what I could tell. Got on plane no problem and was able to slow down. The issue was that I lost neutral and reverse. When I put it into neutral it kept going forward pretty slowly and when I gave it throttle to reverse it moved forward as well. I didn't notice this until I got back to the dock and was very lucky didn't crash into the dock or run up the ramp with the boat. I inspected a few things today by the outdrive ( I think this is the issue here) however I wanted to see if anyone else noticed anything else with the wiring in the outdrive. There was also a black cable that was corroded and just broke off (link to picture here) Any help would get greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The linkage you were looking at inside the rear cover is the shift linkage, and it is disconnected. You will need a 1/4" washer and a cotter pin to reconnect it. Make sure the gear shifter at the helm and the shift linkage on the outdrive are in neutral and the linkage pin on the cable matches with the hole in the shift linkage, and reassemble. I believe that the separated electrical wiring on the bottom left side of the outdrive is for the outdrive trim and tilt sensor. It looks like green corrosion in the broken wires, indicating that someone did not seal the wiring during a previous maintenance job.

Awesome 😎 on point thank you. Yea i already ordered those parts for shift linkage (Cube, Pin and washer) should have them by Friday. I'll have to see how I can repair that trim sensor wire though i don't think I have to replace the whole wire maybe just the area where it broke off from?

Appreciate your response.

So I think that black cable goes to the anoides on the bottom of the boat on the transom.

Correct, they are the active corrosion system, on my boat they are attached to a black box on the inboard side of the transom. Remove the wire that is permanently live or else you may be causing corrosion on your drive.

Looks like the pin for the shift linkage broke but question is what caused it to break? I’d drain and inspect the gear oil as well.

I think it was that impact from the rock that I hit. I really don't think it was in there securely. There was no washer and the cotter pin was pretty old and rusted. So I put a new cotter pin and washer in there. It's running great now.

Is this the black box you are referring too? I am assuming i just need to disconnect that wire on the right side?
