1967 60hp johnson <br />I have been trying to trouble shoot this problem a little at a time for about a week now. I just replaced the coil with a new one because of a weak spark problem. I got the motor running again but it still seems to have a pretty good missfire. At low idle it will sometimes stall. When the motor is good and warm it puts out a considerable amount of smoke and steam. The smoke could be from build up when trying to start the motor trying to solve other problems and just may not have had time to burn off. I am trying to tune the carb in still which means it could be running a little rich. I don't want to try to lean it out until I have the missfire solved. The motor seems to run smooth at mid throttle. Should I adjust the low end needles out on the water?

Before you fiddle with the carb I suggest you hit the basics - check compression & spark. When was the last time that the carb was overhauled? Sync & linc?

The carb was fully overhauled. I don't have a compression gauge to test compression yet.

The rough idle and steam may be due to a blown head gasket. Hence -- a compression check is in order. Testers are cheap. Check any discount store that sells auto parts.
