Loud clicking coming from stern drive?

I have a older alpha one outdrive and mercruiser engine. When going in reverse, there is a loud clicking sound coming from the outdrive but when going forward, its fine. Also, when going forward, and then shifting to reverse, the engine dies. Why is this?<br /><br />thanks for your time.

Keep in mind that we are not there to hear what you are hearing,but all syptoms sound as though your lower shift cable has taken a dump and needs to go.The shift spool may also be bad .You will need to troubleshoot down to all these things.

Is it hard to replace the lower shift cable?(do you need any specialty tools.etc.) Do you know of any online diagrams of the throttole/shift setup? <br /><br />thanks again.
