I have a 2004 maxum 1800mx (3.0 mercruiser). Everytime put the boat in gear there is a loud clunk. I was told there is something that is suposed to make the motor stop or stall when you shift. Any ideas????

I don't know about a 2004, but I've been on several 80's era boats, and they all bang into gear a little harder than you might think they should. I'm told it's normal, but then again all my buddies boats are old clunkers! Possibly your idle is too high, that will make them really harsh when engaging.

Alphas clunk into gear, always have. I also agree that you should verify your idle RPM.

The shift interrupter only works when shifting out of gear to neutral.

Anyone know what the rpm should be. I looked in the owners manual and tried to find info online, but they only show max rpm not idle!!

650-700 rpm in the water, in gear.
