That awfully sounds like rod knock or piston slap.
Both are major expensive to fix.
Stop running that engine and do a compression and leak down test as well as inspect where that vapor was coming from. If that is crankcase vent then you probably broke a ring or hole in piston.
An inspection camera through spark plug hole would probably tell a lot without having to take off the engine head.
