Lounge seat install - question about carpeting

Went out and got 2 new back-back lounge seats for the boat. The seat frames and base are constructed from plastic instead of wood, meaning they will not rot.

In the fall I installed new carpeting in the boat. It is a very low pile indoor/outdoor carpet. I was wondering if I should bother cutting out the carpet in the area where the seats mount. When the seats are in the upright position there is good ventilation between the base and seat at each end.

Should I be concerned about the carpet staying wet under the seats or not worry about it? There is no doubt it WILL get wet and I don't want to end up with mold and mildew BUT I would rather keep the carpet if I can.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Lounge seat install - question about carpeting

I placed my B2B seats on top of the carpet last season. No problems with mold or mildew (yet).

I have been thinking about the same thing and landed on leaving it it so as not to create an area lower than the surrounding carpet for water pool to.,

That's a thought are you making it more likely to have a puddle at the back of the carpet hole when your drying it out then just leaving it alone?

I'd leave it alone. No bunching of the carpet around the bases. Just ventilate when not in use. A dry boat is a happy boat. ;)

Re: Lounge seat install - question about carpeting

After giving it some more thought Ive decided to leave the carpet as-is. I went to so much trouble laying it down and can't bring myself to cut it up :D

If it presents a problem down the road I can cut it out then.

I've never bother to cut out the carpet.
Never had any problems of any kind.

Well, if you know it's going to get wet, then you know that you need to properly dry out your boat to prevent rot in the first place. When you get done with the boat, unfold the bench seats and prop them up so you can get some airflow under there.

Mine are mounted on top of the floor covering, Nautolex, but my seats have cut outs to let water drain out, the seat base has little arches cut near each corner just enough to let any trapped water drain. They are wood bases and are over 40 years old, so the drains must have worked. The vinyl is faded but the seats are rock solid.
