Low compression options

Compression readings are about 90 on all three cylinders in my 96 Yamaha 75hp. Other than running a little rough when idling in gear, the engine is very fast, has great acceleration and starts right up. Therefore, I don't want to spend any big $ at this time to fix. Is it possible that the head gasket is bad or that the problem may be something other than needing new rings? Is this something that I check? Thanks.

Welcome to iboats.

Could be your gauge just reads a bit low. They're about even and the motor runs well. I don't think you have a problem.

Re: Low compression options

I am with Willy.
dont hunt for problems where none exist. the first indication of low compression/blown piston is it wont idle.
good luck and keep posting.
bad fuel pumps can give poor idle. check it
