Re: Low cylinder presure

I did check the cylinder walls for wear. The cylinder wall looks the same as the others.

Thanks for the info on the leak down test, I will try that.

hello
do a leakdown test. if the valves are adjusted correctly at the time of assy there is no reason to run the motor and make a mess. its to easy to adjust them correctly with the engine off.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the help and advise.

I pulled the piston and it had the rings pinched. I had it inspected by a machine shop and was told the cylinder wall was fine. He is putting a new piston together now, should have the motor back together this weekend.

James, I like to save a buck just as much as the next guy...but... how many hours are on this engine ? You already have it torn down, if it has some hours on it, and you have a good machine shop available, why not do a re-build? And by the way something caused this.....don't forget about the manifold and elbow.

Re: Low cylinder presure

I have no idea how many hours are on the boat. I purchased this boat straight out of a barn and have never had it in the water. I do not have a problem tearing this motor down and rebuilding, but at this point I would like to get it in the water so that I can verify the lower end and everything else on the boat. This is my first boat and from what I understand it its a good boat (1985 18.5 Searay), with a good motor. Mercruiser 140's seem to be hard to find. After I get the motor back together I will pressure check.
This is a good motor to work on, I haven't had any trouble and its actually somewhat relaxing. ( its different than working on one of the family cars) I am really concerned about the outdrive. I have never worked on one, and haven't a clue what it might cost to fix/replace.

Ive been following this thread, but now I am laughing, cause I see whats happening here.

jamesr1, your now beyond the point of no return. Too much time and effort now to simply "get it in the water and verify evrything else" HAH LOL

Thats how my $500 18' boat/trailer project started. After six months of work and ??$$ later, I now have a RELIABLE vessel. (also legal in all respects)

You have got the motor torn down now, take your time, finish the motor right, and go from there. I can appreciate the project being relaxing. I probably spend enough time and effort in my shop working on the boat to make people think its a second job for me.

BTW, not laughing at you, just relating to the situation.

Good luck James, I hope everything is fine. Just remember 1) We still have some cold weather ahead...when your done testing....remember to drain and winterize. 2) Something could have caused this....check for any sign of water intrusion.....pull the spark plugs and look at them. Keep us posted.

Re: Low cylinder presure

My test run was canceled. My plugs were fouled and it was late saturday. I have purchased a 5 gal marine gas tank, and new plugs. The gas that is in the boat has water in it, and is probably almost a year old. I put additives in it and thought I could burn it out, but it did not work. I installed the new plugs this morning and the motor sounded sweet for a couple minutes. I do not this I got through the gas that was left in the fuel pump and line before the plugs were fould agian. My next step is hooking up my muffs and running the motor until I am sure that I am using the new gas.
