Any suggestions on low HP motors that would be used for a smaller 14' Alumacraft that's rated for up to 7HP? I'd be using it every fall for duckhunting in MN, so weeds and cool temperatures are a serious considerations. Fishing on smaller waters would be a secondary use. Any that would not be good if purchased used? Functional in adverse conditions, but tolerable to run for a few hours will be the key for me (vs. PC in any discussion of 2- vs 4-stroke). Light would be good as would fuel economy, but not expecting to get it all since the boat it will go on isn't much and the whole rig will ultimately get abused as duck boats so often do...

Hi Tomm,
I also have an aluminum 14' skiff rated for a 20hp Max.I use a 1976 Evinrude 6hp(that came with a weed prop). The boat planes with just me and seems fast enough. If you think your boat is on the light side,a 4hp may even do the trick.Thats my experience anyway. ;)

Thanks, Evinrude 4 and 6 HP engines sound like they are the thing now all I gotta do is find one that runs...- I assume short shaft if there's a choice or at least not long shaft?

Ever considered a trolling motor, say #70 thrust?
Light , dependable, quiet, will run 2+ hours on full charge...

On the trolling motor - in your experience are they dependable in low temps, say below 30 degrees F air temperature, maybe as low as 0 degrees in late duck season. Electric had been suggested and I do have one, but not as big as you have suggested. Any experience on the recharging end of the trolling motor business - like what beyond a battery is good to have if your boat is only man or electric-powered? Recharging unit (portable or back at base camp/garage?), etc....
