low oil light/alarm, but plenty of oil?

Hello,<br /><br /> My year 2000 200hp Johnson Ocean Pro model 200VXSS low oil light and alarm activated yesterday while on the bay. The oil reservoir has plenty of oil in it. I can't get the alarm to shut off. Is there damage any damage to the engine? What could be wrong with it?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />-Will in Maryland

Hi willtill I have had the same problem with a merc.Is the engine still using oil from the reservoir? If there is any doubt run the motor on 50.1 premix until you find the problem.With the alarm /light on trace the sender wire back from the oil tank to the connection & disconnect if the alarm/light goes off the problem is a faulty sender in the oil reservoir.With mercs the solution is a new reservoir.Im not sure with OMC.If the engine is not using oil there is a problem with your oil pump.

Thanks for replying Sharkcat. Yes, I believe that the engine is still using oil, the level in the reservoir has dropped. I will try to disconnect the wire tonight and see if the "low oil" alarm light goes out.<br /><br />Kindest Regards,<br /><br />-Will in Maryland
