low oil pressure Bayliner 225E/275

while replacing the intermediate bearings and ujoints on my 86 Bayliner VP225E/275 that I just purchased decided to do some required maintenance.

I noticed that the engine only had about 8psi pressure at idle and built about 10psi for every 1Krpm. no tapping - so I read previous posts and hoped for the best outcome *stuck bypass on the oil pump".

I removed the oil pump and removed the roll pin and spring (which was under pressure) and the piston. I cleaned the passage and the piston and now it is working again. The piston was stuck wide open, could not see it at the opening in the base, now it freely operates. The gears in the pump are perfect, no wear at all. I believe that the oil pan had never been removed as there was alot of gunk in the bottom which probably was sucked up by the pickup.

Will post the outcome when I put the engine back in this week.

Definitely clean the heck out of that oil pickup and pan. Sounds like it was not well maintained. Even pans that have never been off in 20 years should not have a sludge buildup if the oil was regularly changed.

I'd also consider popping a main bearing cap off to see if its worn down to the copper or has a lot of scratches. Might want to put a rear and front crank seal in there as well, they're only a few bucks (if you get the automotive ones which are identical) and its easy enough. Example on the seals, I just bought a timing cover gasket set for my 350 from Advance, which included the front seal, water pump gasket, and timing cover gasket for 10 bucks. Just the seal was about 6 bucks. Just the seal from the mercruiser dealer is 27 bucks and its absolutely identical, brand and all.

thank you - will do. oil pan gasket (1986) needs to be replaced too -- any cross reference numbers for Fel Pro?

Just be sure its for the one piece rear vs two piece rear main seal. I do believe the gaskets are different, and I think the change was somewhere right around 1986. I'd just go in and ask for the oil pan gasket for a 1986 truck with a 305. Thats what I do when I need non-specific pieces for my 350's.

Also inclined to agree about just replacing the pump. They almost never go bad, but for the small cost of a new one, is it worth the risk?

I bought a new oil pump and pickup, good call - too tough to pull the engine again. they cross referenced the gasket for a one piece rear seal, fel pro OS34500R (port side dip stick).

pulled off two main bearing caps, all was fine, no copper showing - no scratches, they were oversized so probably already had a bottom job done.

no easy way on this pan gasket with the splash shield and the pump. need four hands.

everything was excellent on sunday - 60lbs oil pressure, and quiet motor. no growling and the steering was easy... need to make an adjustment as it pulls slightly to port.
otherwise moving on to the next question..
