Hi
I have an L6 1984 90 hp Merc. It has type III carbs and a CD distributorless ignition system. It came with the boat I just bought so I know nothing about the previous history of the motor. The problem is that I cannot get it to run above (about) 2100 RPM. It has fresh gas, and I made sure that the tank vent was not closed. I've tried it in water and with muffs...same result. It starts and runs smoothly, but bogs as soon as it reaches about 2000 RPM. Does this sound like a carb problem? Someone told me that this motor had a high speed stator and that the problem might lie there. Looking in Selocs manual for this year it only shows a stator, and says nothing about a "high speed" one. Can someone point me in the right direction? Many thanks!!

Re: Low RPM inline Merc

Welcome to iboats!
There are high speed and low speed windings on the one stator of this engine. To test them both, use a multimeter and measure the ohms as described in your Selocs. I dont remember the procedure now, but it is a very easy task to do.

Thanks for the response and the welcome. I've actually been coming here on a semi-regular basis since around Feb.. just never had anything to say till now. In all cases I'll look up the stator winding specs and do what you said. I remember reading a section in the seloc manual about how to test them, so I know it's in there
somewhere.. just gotta find it again. I'll keep you advised. d:)
