I need some assistance. I have a 1987 60 Horse OB. Today, I was cruising along at WOT (for about 5 minutes) when the warning alarm sounded. I turned off the engine immediately - checked everything out - then re-started. However, I was only able to achieve about 3,000 RPM'S. I could take the boat out of gear and just throttle it and achieve 5,500 RPM's. However, in gear, it will only get 3,000. Any ideas on what could cause this. Compression is very good.
Could it be a spark plug, or coil that is overheating? Or do I have a more serious problem? Any assistance or ideas will be appreciated. I am not sure why the warning alarm sounded.

It could be a ign. failure, ck for spark and plugs or a carb could be plugged up. Don't free rev a engine in neutral or you will really cause some major damage. Also you need to find the problem that caused the warning horn to blow was it heat or oil or a sencor problem

Thanks. This is the second time that it has happened. Last weekend it did the same thing. I took it back to the dealer. He checked it out, did not find anything. He ran some powertune through it and tested in the lake. It did great. I transported it back to the lake I am on, put it in the water and it did great for about 5 minutes then the same problem. Could the fuel filters be clogged with debries? Would that cause a lost of power under load, but not in gear? Would that cause the alarm to come on?
The warning horn does not come back on after restarting. I suspect it may be a sensor. I am going to call the mechanic tomorrow and discuss this with him. I am not sure that he is going to be very helpful since he has already looked at it and said that compression, etc... was good. I appreciate your input.

runs lean due to clogged or dirty carb, overheats and bam. Clean them and you will be good to go.
