Low RPM Under Load

When NOT in gear we can get about 5000 RPM out of the motor.

Under load we can only get about 3000 RPM and that equates to about 1/2 to 3/4 normal speed.

In addition, this morning when we lifted the motor to horizontal (to test run the motor in a tub) some oil leaked out of the starboard water intake on the lower unit.

At first we thought it just might be some overflow (hoped actually)

But now we're suspicious that some seal has blown or something.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Check the leaked oil to make sure it's not just 2 stroke oil in the fuel. I had something similar happen, but when I touched and then smelled my fingure, I realized it was just unburned fuel mixed with water.

Sound like you are running on 3 cylinders.

Check the compression and check spark.

I did smell it, definately lower unit lube, We just changed it a couple of weeks ago. (also double checked all the plugs, all good)

We'll try the Compression/Spark Test Tomorrow. I'm doubting that's the problem. HOWEVER! We've been bitten before by something basic that we "assumed" was good.

So that'll be next.

The Lower Unit is leaking like a sieve now

aerated oil leaking out all around the lower seam.

Hoping it's just a seal of some sort, working on that next

Compression/spark tests reveal alot and give you a place to start!! Roscoe is a smart guy!!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the Spark and Compression were good.

But again, it's always good to check the basics! I've found and fixed some rather sneaky problems by going back to the basics
