I had my boat fixed for no spark and the guy completly screwed me. He did fix it but now I have 12.3v at best. Is there a way to diagnose this problem? I have all the maunals.

Need more details like where are you checking the voltage at?

Thanks for the response. I have a gauge and my fish finder has a voltage meter as well. I always had 14 or more volts with the same accesories that I am running. I did put a new stator and the guy took it off and put my old one on.

So it sounds like your charging system is not working. Appears that you're just seeing battery voltage. First place I'd look would be at the connections on the rectifier. Make sure the stator wires are connected correctly, ground wire and battery wire are also connected on the rectifier. There's also a circuit breaker mounted towards the bottom of the terminal strip by the starter. If it's popped, push the reset button (it's shaped more like a little flat piece).

Pnwboat, thanks for the help. I will check it out tomorrow and let you know what I find.

IF you find that the circuit breaker has not been tripped, check the voltage at the two yellow stator wires. If you get 13-15 volts at idle, then check the black and red wires at the rectifier. No voltage there means a bad rectifier. I'm told radio shack sells a replacement cheaper than boat stores. I have converted to a regulator so I can't tell you for sure.

I found that the rectifier is at fault. I understand that it is just 4 diodes. Does anyone have specs on a 89 85 hp engine? I do know that the stator produces 210vs but how many amps is needed? Thanks

The Radio shack version is a Full Bridge rectifier, P/N 276-1185. It's rated at 50V 25 amps. $3.29 +tax. The stator in your 1989 85HP doesn't put out more than maybe 9 AMPS at 16 volts. The 210V that you are referring to is the winding that goes to the CD modules. The winding that charges the battery only puts out about 16 volts A.C.
