I did the dumbest thing by adding the TC-W3 oil that mixes in the fuel tank into the lower end gears and not playing attention to connecting the pump to the lube , I'm draining the unit and can this cause any more damage to my lower unit?

No you are safe...... as long as you drain and refill the lower unit. Hey we all make mistakes! ;)

I will move this post to the right place :)

i wouldnt think it would hurt anything as long as you didnt run it,like bob said, just drain it,and put the right stuff in,,,if your seals leak, its prob not because of the tcw3,they just needed replaced anyway

That's also great, but I think it's best to change them all, I filled it up and yes, I ran it. I know LOL!

You didn't mess up any seals by running it that way. TCW3 does not damage seals and it's a pretty good light lubricant on its own. Just think, it provides all of the engine lubrication when diluted with gas at 50:1
But, do whatever it takes to make yourself feel comfortable.
Did you run it in a barrel, or on the water?

Re: Lower end Evinrude 40hp elec start lube question

Sorry it took so long to get back and thanks for the help! I ran the motor in a barrel, It started to smoke and I had some kind oil floating on top of the water (inside the shaft), could it be a leak coming from the top of the shaft? I removed the lower unit, the O ring seal and the impeller was soft, so I think the best is to change them all, and to top it off! I had the oil mix setting in there for about two weeks, I believe the fumes did not help and I hope I didn't do any damage.

It is supposed to smoke. And it is supposed to make a gooey slime on the barrel water. And it is supposed to be run on a boat in the lake, not a barrel. You will find it is much cleaner running where it is supposed to be used.

I know and I know, you have to keep in mind that I'm a cadet, this is the first time changing my lower unit over the winter and I needed just to test it and good thing I did.

i think everyone thats answered you ,are trying to help you,not just giving you off the wall suggestions, the mix shouldnt have hurt any seals but you said you did run it with mix in it,if you did this all day then you might have a problem,,,,,,,,,,,,also, your motor will smoke,as it is burning the 2 stroke oil,,,and there will be a oily residue in your barrel due to these motors not burning up all of the fuel, normal,,,,,and as for a definite answer,,for the most part youve gotten it,,,,fill it up with the right stuff recmd for your model, and run it,,,recheck your l/u oil after running,,,if it doesnt have a milky look to it and looks as it did when you put it in,and it shifted fine,,forget about it,it should be good to go,thats about as straight of an answer i can give you on the info youve given, also wish you the best of luck

Re: Lower end Evinrude 40hp elec start lube question

Thanks Glassmaster68, your help is appreciated!!!

Restornator; I bought the lubricate tube for my electric start and because the pump twist on, I cleaned out an oil container very good, pored the tube lube in capped it put it down and when I was ready to fill it up, I grabbed the oil mix in stead. I don't know what I was thinking about! now I'm just waiting for the kit to arrive at the marina and I'll try again.

Re: Lower end Evinrude 40hp elec start lube question

the tube lube was in a tube to make it easy to fill your lower unit with,,,with the top screw out[vent hole] then the bottom screw[fill hole],dont mess with the phillips head if you have one on there,,,you squeeze the tube into the bottom hole, until it comes out of vent hole[top one],when it comes out of the top one ,put the screw back in the bottom, ,i think they usually come in 10 oz tubes so you might need two tubes,,,,mine held 15 oz,,if this is electric shift make sure you use type c oil back in it

Re: Lower end Evinrude 40hp elec start lube question

Glassmaster68, I didn't know about the tube going direct, I'm learning! I also have a 1964 evinrude with that Phillips screw you were referring too and I did remove it last year, but you have to be very careful not to let the gears move out of place or your screwed, mine went good. I'll send an up-date when I complete the task. Thanks again for the info!
