How many(OZs)of oil does it take to change the oil in the lower-end of a 150 Johnson out board? Thanks,Lowell

It depends on the year and drive model, but the 1982 V6 gearcase held 28.3 oz. according to the factory service manual.

It is a 1983 and I put three 10oz. tubes in.It was running out fast at the bottom port while changing tubes that I ended up putting the plug in the bottom port and finished the third tube through the top port.It wouldnt take anymore through the top port so I assumed it was topped off and inserted the top plug.Did I do this right?Thanks,Lowell

I like using the pump with the screw in adaptor, so that there is no leakage, as compared to the tubes that you used. It is fairly cheap and saves clean up and mess. The adaptor screws into the drain hole, then you just pump the handle until you see the fluid exiting the vent hole. Screw in the vent screw (and dont forget to add the new gasket!!), remove the adaptor, then screw in drain screw, with new gasket. I also just looked in my manual, since I did not know off hand, but my 76 V6 gearcase holds 44 ozs, although that would not mean anything to you.

Don't get confused about the quantity. The standard 1983 is exactly the same as the 1982. PN 391329.

Your technique is fine, but the gearcase is considered "full" when the oil runs out of the vent plug hole. Too much and you can blow the seals because a lot of pressure is generated from heat and friction when running.

Use the pump. It only costs ~$10 and makes WAY less of a mess. OMC dealers will sell it.

Walmart now sells the pump too,about 6 bucks...
