If I am not mistaken, you probably have a Firestone built by Scott-Atwater. It takes grease, not oil. Most people use Lubriplate 105 "Motor Assembly Grease", available at NAPA Auto Parts Stores.

Re: lower end oil ?

My after market service manual indicate Outboard gear oil usually SAE 90.
If your omc is similar it will work.

I believe your Firestone is a direct drive...no F-N-R...so FR is right on the money, no hypoid oil. Use Lubriplate 105 instead.

Re: lower end oil ?

sorry for the confusion.
There seems to be some confusion in my manuals. I have 2 aftermarket ABOS publishing service manuals covering 60-70 and 55-64
both state 3.5 and 3.6 "the lowerunit gears are lubricated by oil in the gearcase" They then go on to describe a typical gear lube change.
No mention of gearcase type.In the same manuals the 4hp states grease.
I'm assuming direct drive was missed and gear shift only covered. I'll make note in my manuals. My 3rd manual covers only 60-69 and 65-69 4hp only.

I think the shift model is more apt to leak than the straight drive. The shift rod seal wasn't exactly high tech in those things.

I want to thank you guy's I was all set to put oil in it and I think that would have done some damage , and my 12 year old would have been doing some rowing not to say that would have been good for him.

A large trash barrel full of water She fired right up . This motor seems to be pritty peppy . I hope my son's have fun with it this summer. Thank you again Paul
