I was looking today on how to check my gearcase lube. I followed the directions and nothing came out so obviously I need to put some in. However the manual states to fill it through the fill/drain hole until it comes out of the vent hole on the top of the skeg?? Won't it spill out of the fill hole before it fills the lower?

That's pretty much how it works. Cool isn't it? Get gear oil in the bottle with the tapered tip on the end and squeeze it in and you will make much less of a mess. Install the vent plug though before you remove the bottle from the fill/drain. It won't drain out so fast when you remove the bottle to re-install the fill/drain plug.

On a good sealed gear housing if you remove the drain plug you will only have maybe a drop or two of oil come out. I prefer the pump over the tapered spout type oil container. They cost about 10 bucks and buying the oil by the quart is cheaper then by the tube.

Wrong on this motor..its a small 1/8th NPT Pipe Plug on the drain. You drain it there. back in, and fillup top through the fill hole, until it comes out the vent hole, which is right next to it...

Actually, there IS only the vent screw at the top on this lower unit.

There is no mention on this thread what type of motor it is. From the original description it sounds like an over and under drain and vent plug.
