Re: lower grease?

My advice would be to change it out yourself, so you know exactly what you put in. This way you can monitor the oil quality yourself by comparing the oil in the case with leftover oil in the new bottle. When I think about avocados, I think opaque green. Depending on the lube used, it should be somewhat translucent...like honey...not like paint!

Changing the LU oil is something that is very easily done and should be done at least once a year while replacing the plug washers EACH time you remove the drain/fill plugs.

Re: lower grease?

Redneck, The description you gave does indeed sound normal. You do need to change the gear oil at least once a year, preferably in the fall, so you are sure there is no water in the gearcase over the winter.

I recommend synthetic marine gear oil for newer motors(1990+) and non synthetic marine gear oil is fine for older motors

well i just went and had some carb work and the lower unit oil changed by a mechanic but was just kinda worried about the way the stuff looked,i always kinda thought it was supposed to be translucent as well, because this stuff is just the light green color but not translucent, but didnt see any water in it at the same time.thanks
