try having somebody gently and slowly rotate the flywheel while you slide the Lower Unit back in place. yes, make sure its in nuetral. also, that big shaft is the drive shaft. the prop shaft is the short shaft that the prop is bolted to

phatmanmike;
Hey thanks a lot. I also learned tonite that I ruined the impeller I just bought. I didnt realize that they are supposed to be curved inside the housing. I "Assumed" that it was just the next size up, and trimmed the ends off the vanes/fins. Do'h

This is a typical example of why a $50 shop manual will pay for itself. I've just been trying to get it out once or twice before I tear it apart. The guy told me it was a 40hp, and I just found out it is a 50 hp. 1st good thing to happen, tho I've only had it 2 weeks.

Thanks again phatmanmike. Happy boating.

Victory ! at least partialy. I figured out that I wasnt getting the shifter shaft to fit into the lower units end of the shaft. I got the leg up and can put it into forward and neutral, but I cant get it to go into reverse.

The lower unit's shifter shaft will turn say '340 degrees in either direction, then 20 degrees of neutral. Its pretty confusing, and I think I may only be one degree off. Think if I just move the lobed sproket one position over I might get it working perfectly shifter wise.

I almost cried when I seen the other problem, I have water coming out of the "head". The top (#1) cylinder plug hole pisses water. Not the actual plug hole, but along the edge of the plug hole. I can only pray its possibly only the gasket, but I'm sure its a crack.

It runs fine though, otherwise. I havent had it in water yet, but I got a rain barrell set up under the leg. I let it run for 10 mins and it didnt even sputter once. I put it barley in gear and it was all good.

I dont know if this is normal, but when I first started the motor with the new impeller it pumped out water pretty good, but after around a min of running it reduced to almost less then half of the original amount. I cant see any thermostat mechanism or imagine how it might work.

Thanks again phatmanmike.

I gotta get me a manual. :%
