What are the tools to pull / press on the lower main bearing for a 1977 Evinrude 55HP (55773D). Any info to help me with this area is also appreciated. :)

The bearing isn't shot , but I want piece of mind for $17.

The only old items I want to use is the crank and the connecting rods.

EDIT! Like a idiot right after I post this I find half of the questions I was looking for.
Is this okay to remove it with?

Says I need a two jaw puller

How will I press it on now?

Thank You,

Since the present bearing is no good, you can remove it by simply using a drift/punch and a hammer on the outer edges to tap it off. Just tap it off evenly so that you do not apply a prying effect to the lower portion of the crankshaft.

The new bearing can be installed by using a brass drift/punch to tap it on, holding the brass drift/punch on the center portion of the bearing closest to the crankshaft. I've done this many times, it does not involve rocket science mentality.

Thank you Joe

Gonna go try it today. I found this morning a thread on heating it up to 200 F and slipping it on the crank but Ill try your method first.

I dont want to risk distorting/weakening the metal and causing problems in the future.

Plus your way will save me $40 bucks in tools that I wont use that much. Although sometimes its nice to have new tools for my arsenal. :)

Success!

Had to heat it up slightly for 5-10 secs about 3 times.

And could only tap from 2 diffrent angles, 4 taps on one / 4 taps on the other and switched over and over.
Thanks again Joe, I'd imagine that tapping it back on should be easier.

Does it have to be brass to protect from damage? I was thinking mabey I could get a socket or something similar to go around the crank end and butt up against the inner race completely and get a good uniform tap on each hit.
What do ya think?
