Lower pitch didn'd rise the max RPM. What's wrong?!

Hello,
I have a custom fiberglass 25 foot panga, Eduardono style, beefed up, with double floor and some additional fiberglass lockers, ankle locker, live well. Additional weight to this would be some 1300lbs between people, fuel and equipment.
The engine is Yamaha V4 140HP two stroke outboard, from around 96 or 97. As far as I know this model was not sold in the US.

With the 21’’ pitch aluminum prop the acceleration is very slow. Once on plain, she gets to some 36mph at 4600rpm (full throttle), the engine runs very well. The RPM range for the engine is 4500-5500. Still, the max RPM never gets to engine’s theoretical 5500 rpm.

We tried 19’’ pitch stainless steel prop, we got better acceleration, but surprisingly no max RPM change, still some 4600 max at about 33-34 mph (slightly lower max speed comparing to 21’’). We did not get the expected 400rpm change.

I’d appreciate any suggestion, what could be the matter? Thanks.

Are you sure the throttle is wide open? Are the carb flaps truly horizontal?

Sounds like you got more throttle left in there somewhere?

Suzuki40

I think that’s a strong possibility. This leads to the question – how do I check if the throttle is actually wide opened? I think this one would be appropriate for the Yamaha R/M forum, so I’ll post it there. Thanks!

The 19" stainless should carry the same rpms as a 21" aluminum, with less flex and more bite.Go on down to a 17" stainless, and you should see your 400 rpm increase while carrying about the same speed. As a bonus your hole shot will improve a bunch.
Another option would be a large diam.stainless 4 blade for that heavy boat. You'ld get more lift and a better hole shot, than a 3 blade.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I think I would look into your ignition/throttle synchronization and throttle opening before I did any more prop swapping.

Max rpm is normally regulated by load, but can also be limited by failure to fully advance the ignition or open the throttle plates.

Good luck. :)
