Lower shift cable boot replacement - does outdrive have to come off?

Hi Everyone,
I hate asking something as simple as this, and it really isn't that hard to take the outdrive on and off, but I was curious:

Alpha One, Gen1. I only need to change the shift cable boot. The U-joint bellow is new and I should've replaced the shift boot while I was in there. Anyway, it seems like if I raise the outdrive up high enough, there is room to get to the boot and pull out the cable without having to remove the outdrive. Can this be done or is the cable not flexible enough for this?

No recommended. You take the chance of kinking the cable sheath and core and then your pulling the drive to replace the cable too

I just finished replacing my shift cable, and I don't think the cable would be flexible enough to pull out between the sterndrive and the transom. Nor, would I want to bend it that sharply, and risk ruining it. Not to mention, if you're already planning on pulling it out through the transom, to feed through the new boot, why not drop your drive. It's not that hard of job, and it's always nice to regrease your splines, check your gimble bearing, and if you split your cases, check your water pump impeller.
