Lower Shift cable question

Can not seem to find any info on this.. I just installed my lower shift cable. When I was tightening the nut on the cable, the entire cable (the core was not installed yet) turned with it... I was able to get it tightened in OK, but I was surprised that the cable would turn with it.. It was flopping around with each turn.. It just seemed odd because all the info says to use a guide wire to make sure it routes the same.. but it would be impossible since it moves when tightening.. The core is in and the bellows are installed, and everything seems to be OK but just wanted to double check. Thanks for any advice.

The part you missed was "keep the core in a relatively straight line when installing" Assuming it did not kink/twist and the core moves freely with no resistance you are ok.
The hex is part of the cable and is not meant to turn by itself
The reference to a core guide is when you remove the gimbal housing with the cable , install the new cable in the housing and then reattach the housing using the guide to route the cable as it was.
