I am looking to get an idea of the difficulty difference in changing the lower shift cables. 96 Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen II, vs. a 93 OMC Cobra. Accessibility seems to be similar on both crafts. I just did the 96 Alpha 1, first time mistakes cost me some time but over all but not an overly taxing project by any means. My PITA scale puts it at around a 5 or 6 on a 1 to 10 scale. Anyone done both, and how do they compare?

both are simple and barring corrosion can be done in less than 2 hours.

everybodies gotta have a goal :):)
good luck
actaully the OMC ,IMHO, is easier cause I aint gotta sweat any bellows.
I usually do take careful measurements before dissasembly to see if its been mummoxed with in the past.
if no one has mummoxed it its doable in an hour-hour and a half on most OMC rigs . corrosion can add a half a day :), both are fairly simple though.
just take some cable measurements on the old OMC stuff. occasionally you will get on a tad bit different than what the manual says.

Back in the recall days of the Cobra cable, 1986-87, we were doing them in about 45 minutes if there was no corrosion or previous screw-ups. Flat rate was 1.5 hours.

what seahorse says.
if no one has mummoxed it and corrosion is not an issue OMC is usually easier to change than merc.
toss in someone that has been playing with adjustments and bending the cut out switch arm and playing with the overstroke cams and all bets are off.

From what i've seen on my initial review of the system, all of the above apply except corrosion. JIC I'm putting the beer on ice (lots of ice) before i start.
