Lower shift cable????

I think I have a bad lower shift cable, it will not go into either gear. it just clicks and then starts to give throttle before it locks in to gear. I tried to adjust the cable and it is hard to move by hand (stiff cable) and even when pulling cable out as far as it will go I can still turn the prop it just clicks.
so I am assuming it is bad , and if it is how hard is it to replace. Ive never taken an outdrive off and not sure If I can handle this job. I read the procedure, it sounds like it is difficult but not sure. do I need any special tools?? Or Is this I job best left to a pro??

I cant lift it off the ground but i can drag it around all over the place if I unlock the wheels

yea, sorry I forgot... its a 78 470 merc. alpha 1

and no I cant carry my toolbox in one hand... ... im just not experienced with outdrives, the most Ive done on them is the water pump. and Id rather not get stuck on the water b/c I didnt do something right.

Btw,...... That's a Mod.1, Pre-Alpha.......
But they're nearly the Same......
