lower shift cable

putting alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive back together, pulled out the lower shift cable to put bellows on it. Now I am looking at where that shift cable is supposed to go back on the engine( I guess its called the linkage) and it looks like there is no way it could ever go back on-it just wouldn't fit, that barrel will never turn enough. any ideas?

sorry I put it in forward and turned the prop til it stopped and shift cable is in proper position,
